Honestly, I wasn't going to reply again until I saw this funny post. Here's my point: tire traction does not at all decline linearly with tread depth. It has nothing to do with tread depth at all on dry road surface. In rain, it's a binary function of whether hydro-planing is taking place (i.e. a function of vehicle speed).
We are not exactly talking about bald tires here. The OP was simply asking whether he should keep his tires that still have a lot of tread on it, and where to put it. It seems to me, given that we are now in March, with 9 months of hardly any snow ahead, your analogy to RC cars with rubber tires vs. smooth rims is quite unwarranted. There simply isn't a linear correlation between traction vs. tread depth.
