Resistance to hydroplaning... Posted by Snowmobile [Email] (#686) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Snowmobile) on Wed, 14 Mar 2012 17:24:24 In Reply to: BTW, Tread Depth, Tim, Wed, 14 Mar 2012 13:42:07 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
to me, this is one of the most important elements of a summer tire... I was amazed the difference in this regard between tire designs... design seems to almost matter more than depth. Granted, the c900 has pretty narrow tires, but I could not make the Nokian NRH2's on that car hydroplane regardless what I did (within reason on normal roads) right down until they were worn out... it's a symmetric directional tire (similar design to Michelin Hydroedge or one you had, maybe on the vert iirc)... on the 9-5, the dunlops up front hydroplaned surprisingly easily (65 mph with moderate rain, puddles accumulating in tire indentations in the highway)... I wouldn't have thought twice about that with the NRH2's... and the dunlops had more tire depth! I forget the model, it was a Signature of some sort, a touring all season... non-directional symmetric...
I'm looking at Nokian V's for the 9-5, and they are more of a LRR profile (asymmetric) but claim as good hydroplaning resistance as the previous generation Nokians... will be interesting to see. They have deep grooves, but less sideways channeling from the look of it...
James...
