Drivers would accelerate very slowly, maintain set speeds for long periods, and there are stories of drivers and co-drivers changing positions without stopping the car to avoid idling and acceleration. I remember reading an article some years back by one of the drivers who said that some cars carried extra gas in hidden tanks to make it appear they got better mileage than they did.
