What exactly is the appeal of a _series_ hybrid??

Every time you convert energy from one form to another, there is loss due to inefficiency. A hybrid vehicle by definition at certain times is powered by the engine only. When that's the case, it seems much more sensible to couple the engine to the wheels as tightly as possible rather than going through conversion from rotation to electrical power then back to rotation. A parallel hybrid can also have one device functioning as a generator and motor, whereas a series hybrid requires two separate devices.

What am I missing?
