That has been my experience with Dell vs Toshiba laptops also... I've run into lots of hardware issues with Dell products + avoid them now like the plague.

The OS is another matter, and certainly some versions of Windoze stink (eg Vista). Otherwise, imho it is a preference thing. Just like there are Linux fans. What works well for one doesn't always work well for others... definitely worth playing with each of Mac/Linux/7 to see what fits best before buying!
