I had the same reaction as Justin. I am assuming that the domain or hosting account was purchased by and is still listed under the terminated employee's name. Apparently someone forgot to do the normal SOP follow up for terminated employees of changing passwords, account ownerships, etc.

I actually applaud GoDaddy for having a policy on domain ownership and sticking to it; in contrast, Facebook recently terminated my ownership of our business fan page because someone stated that it was theirs - fortunately this was a consultant that my partner hired (and I wasn't aware that she was going to do this), but it was alarming how easy it was to have my ownership usurped without asking me.

I have been a very happy GoDaddy customer for years. Not a fan of their ads, but their support and service has been stellar, and at a price that is very hard to beat.
