As you may recall from your swimming days, sprints are a very different animal than long distance - what Phelps does well are sprint-type events. That said, he would probably still be able to hold his own, as he also has technique.

(FYI, I'm a former 50 and 100 freestyle and 100 butterfly swimmer)
