I've owned 12 or so Volvos since my first 140 in '72. Most were troublesome rustbuckets overall, Sure the 240 wagon seemed like the perfectly designed car, exactly the right size, enjoyable to drive (after some ipd add-ons) and carried enough stuff to remodel 2 houses.
But they rusted away, lost trannys, and that blower motor from hell they built the car around... OY!
I have a 2005 V70R (Volvo "Aero" wagon) and it has been the most trouble-free, reliable used car I ever bought.
Had an S60 AWD for a while - a nice solid car that handled better than a 330XI, but seemed "small" and couldn't replace the 9000 I had for 10 years.
So... Volvos HAVE gotten much better, they don't break as much and have stopped rusting.
Kinda like Saabs - my 99s and 900s were rustbuckets too!
Maybe there are just fewer people now who appreciate Volvo and Saab - they've just gone out of style.
