You nailed it, the Passat is downright boring. That's why I'm having such a hard time with this, They just sort of nailed it when talking about driving experience with the BMW (But you have to ignore the really serious flaws - I thought SAAB was bad).
The reason the evaporator core is so expensive is not because of the part, but because of the labor. I swear they built the whole car around this one stupid part with an exceptionally high failure rate. Shop time is 11.5 hours and at the average shop rate of $110/hr in this town it adds up very fast.
I know the other stuff is wear and tear, and that's fine. But IF I put the money into it, then I'm in it for the long haul. Normally it wouldn't be a question, but with changing situations... I just don't know if my thinking on this is logical.
FWIW, I put the rear-facing car seat in my Jeep last night. It's a tight fit. I don't know how the dog, baby stuff, and luggage will fit for a road trip.
