Furnace heating oil consumption. Gallons Per Hour?

New to heating oil. I always had natural gas prior. I posted recently about my EPA wood burning insert experience. I plan on heating as much as I can with that this winter.
The house I purchased has a brand new Carrier split forced air unit. The Beckett oil burner on it says it has a .80 GPH (Gallons per Hour) nozzle on it. I am assuming that for every hour of run time I will burn almost a gallon of fuel? Is that correct?
I installed a Venstar TS 5800 wifi thermostat that can monitor run time on the oil burner. If my calculation are correct I can see in the dead of winter easily burning 3-4 gallons of heating oil a day. At 3.50+ a gallon I would be looking at $300-400 a month heating bills? I have friends that say they spend $2500+ a year on oil!
Forced hot air seems very inefficient as well. The burner will run for about 40 mins to bring the house up a few degrees. It then cools off quite quickly.
Time to go split and stack some more firewood...
