and a micro SIM is easy to come by, many carriers have full size SIMs with and micro SIM cut-outs. Depending on where you go, some providers may even cut a micro SIM down to nano SIM for you without charge. I had a full size SIM cut to a micro SIM for me one time when I was traveling in Asia.

Both my daughters have 4S's and they both have Verizon SIM cards in the slots. One time, I took out the Verizon SIM of one Verizon branded 4S and it powered up with an error saying that a SIM card was missing.

Verizon can unlock the SIM slot if the account has been in good standing for 3?? months (whatever that means) and one can choose to use anyone's SIM outside of Verizon territory.

We've been Verizon customers for many years, and when the iPhone 4S came out, it was advertised as a true world phone.

Wife has a 5S, and it has an unlocked SIM slot and a Verizon SIM card by default.

I think Verizon has changed the current 4S so it doesn't need a SIM card in the US.
