Well, Saab lover as you say but if you work or live in SF or LA and feel you are kind of far from a Saab mechanic, you might be better off with a more well known brand.
There must be more Saab mechanics per square mile in both cities than many other places where Saab owners live. Some, throughout America, drive some 100-200 miles to get to a shop.
One thing that irks me is when someone calls and say, I wish you were closer, and I know they are about 10 miles from me. A lot of people would love to have 10 miles to their closest Saab shop. Heck, I get calls from the East coast, Texas and what not and they say, I wish you were closer.
The commute between the two cities can be a challenge but AAA Plus gives you 100 miles towing and they might even have another step up membership with more towing so that would give you peace of mind.
Parts can always be a challenge but I think your 99 9-3 will be in much better shape for a long time than any of the other Saab lovers that keep their V4 96's, two stroke Sonnet or 99T rolling on the road.
But if you have a steady commute like that, you really need something reliable and a 15-16 year old car might not cut it.
