I was the original poster on the earlier post. They payback would take a really long time and I still keep hearing that the new stuff is junk. I have heard more people tell me there older 25+ year old fridges are still going, have had no issues etc.
Here are my numbers. Have a kilowat meter hooked up. Mine uses about 3 kwh a day. Some days less.
I am using 1080 kwh a year at .20 kwh so about $216 a year. New ones are rated around 500-600 kwh a year. So I would save about $100 a year with a newer fridge. Would take many years to pay off the difference in the newer fridges with unknown reliability. I plan on running my 32 year old fridge until it craps out.
The one case of modern is better that I have experiences is I installed a heat pump electric hot water heater and have been getting massive savings from that. In heat pump mode it used only 500 watts compared to 4500 for an electric element.
