As retiree's we would only need 1.1 car, but have 2. Our semi rural sub is about 3 to 7 miles from a town that is stretched along the river. Bigger communities with bike trails are 30+ miles away. We drive only about 10K miles per year and get by in the winter months driving only 1 car.
Between river bluffs and roads unsuitable for biking, (think narrow, curvy, rough in places, and no shoulders) they are pretty much out of the question. There is a nice long bike trail along the river, but hauling bikes there is best. Biking is intriguing, but at my age peddling or even pushing a bike up the bluff hill is discouraging, let alone taking the risks of riding on shoulderless rural roads. My brother walked a block to work for decades, and for recreation rode his bike all over the place. He now lives in a small hilly rural community and biking is mostly around town.
