Anaerobic sealer vs. RTV Posted by Gene N [Email] (#1094) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Gene N) on Wed, 15 Apr 2015 10:14:31 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I'm wrapping up an oil pump replacement on my wife's Accord V6 (1998 - 265K miles). I was all set to use an anaerobic sealer (Loctite 518) on the pump casting and oil pan for reassembly. At the last minute, I checked the Honda shop manual, and it specified Hondabond, which translates into Permatex Ultra Grey RTV, a high-temp, high-torque RTV gasket maker. I chickened out on the Loctite 518 and used the Permatex RTV. I instantly remembered why I disliked RTV for oil pans as I was using it. The installation requirements are a pain. It requires a 1/8" bead on the pan, wrestling the pan into place without touching the bead, finger tightening the 18 bolts, waiting an hour, torquing the bolts to spec (8.9 ft-lbs) in a specific order, waiting a day before filling sump with oil, and hoping there are no leaks. You only get about 5 minutes of fooling around before fitting the pan, otherwise the RTV starts to skim over. This was preceded by following a similar sequence for the oil pump since the pan bolts to the pump, like the way the pan bolts to the timing cover on a SAAB 4 cylinder engine.
What I am wondering about was if I could have gotten away with substituting an anaerobic sealer for the RTV since it is a newer technology. Other than being able fill a gap over 0.05", I can't see may advantages to RTV.
Any thoughts?
