Lived in a town of 4500 population that was an hour drive from the 'cities'. We made biweekly trips to the cities for shopping, groceries, medical services, and dinning out. All of those were in short supply or expensive in a small community. If you want anything beyond what a basic hardware store or auto repair shop has, it ment a trip or ordering and waiting.
You can be considered an outsider for years, unless you are a doctor or someone who meets - mixes with the public on a regular basis. A few people can be true friends, especially those who have lived or came from out of town. You have to remember, the locals have known each other since before grade school and are heavily interrelated (be careful about what you say out whom). They have each other sized up from way back, and feel uncertain about newbies.
Otherwise it's a slower laid back environment with minimal traffic. I drove 18 miles to work through 2 stop signs and 2 stop lights, and it it was common to be the only car in site on the road. Took me about a year to slow down and enjoy the scenery, mostly farm land.
