There is a lot to the design of a detent, with many design compromises. Increasing the spring tension and resulting detent torque increases the wear on the detent profile. It's a compromise between detent torque and wear. Wear will decrease the torque. So it's a balance between initial torque, the rate of torque decay from wear, and the number of cycles the detent should maintain adequate torque. GM has requirements for these parameters and more. This switch most likely met the requirements, abet maybe marginally. One uncontrolled variable on detent wear is the weight of junk hung off the key. Eventually they reduced the slot in the handle to a hole, which limited torque applied to the key from hanging junk. Why they used a slot in the first place is the result of design compromise, or was it 'that's the way it's always been done'. One big factor in design is cost, if there is too much cost in an item someone will take it out, compromising the design.
