Justin offers good advice. I agree with DE that if much of what he does is reading, and word processing etc, screen size does not matter much of the time, but portability and battery life might! Having a large monitor back in his room to dock to would be a good idea.
Otoh in engineering, having a larger screen available more often may be useful. Certainly if he does much with larger spreadsheets, or CAD (electrical or mechanical), and if any of this needs to be done away from home base, having a bit more screen real estate will help. Engineering and science is still quite windows-centric. Marine sciences may be more likely windows than mac depending a bit on the specific vein. I would check!
also be careful that your laptop output is suitable to drive a larger monitor at an optimal screen resolution, though that should not be a problem these days with HDMI.
