I have a 2-phase $800 7kW propane generator, a proper manual transfer panel and a hookup to a 60 gallon propane pan. Just a minor inconvenience of needing to roll it out and connect the LP and electrical lines on rare occasions that I need it. It also has an electrical starter which I do not use (it is more of a hassle for me to keep the battery charged rather than just pull a cord).
But is a fraction of the cost of a stationary one, can be moved around and is much easier to service if needed. It is also stored indoors so rust and dirt are much less of a problem.
But anyway - I suggest you read this book before deciding:
