I am looking for a camera so I can keep an eye on my cats while I am out of town - two of them are quite elderly now and I want to make sure they are doing OK other than the once a day when the petsitter comes in to feed them.

Really what I need is for short video sections to be recorded when triggered by a motion sensor, that I can access remotely (from my iPhone most likely) to check on whenever I want. I did buy a Foscam FI9821P off Amazon that I thought would work, but it turns out I can only watch live video from my phone on this, not recorded video.

Dropcam would presumably work, but I don't really want to pay the monthly subscription fee when it's something I will only really use once every few months. I'm happy to record to a local SD card as long as I can access those recordings remotely.

Any thoughts about what would work for me?
