I'm not a lawyer so.
Legally I don't think it is much to do with a tourist Visa expiring in a few days.
I also don't see how he thought a permanent Visa application would have gone through if he is just a one man show or owner of a small company with a few employees. And being here working already on a tourist Visa would certainly not help his cause.
All depending on how high in demand he is for the fashion industry, he might get help from the big businesses applying for him for a temporary work Visa but that takes some time too.
If his furniture business is really thriving and there is need to hire several legal residents, it is a time limit work Visa that can be applied for but it usually last a year or two before you have to reapply. A friend of mine got one of those opening up a Saab/Volvo repair shop hiring legal residents.
Applying for the high demand specialty industry work Visa like I did also takes time and now you have to be in your home country and apply from there which takes time and you have to have a company behind you backing the application.
So the marrying for the right reasons is probably the least troubled way to go but still with no guarantees unless it is for the right reasons.
