Battery terminals should be treated with care. The soft lead terminals can come loose in the battery case causing leaks and cell problems. Tapping, twisting, or other loads on the terminal subject the cell plates to movement and stress which sooner or later can compromise the function of that cell. It's best to loosed the cable clamp bolt and carefully spread the clamp open to loosen it from the post, then clean the clamp and post with a battery terminal brush. When installing the clamp be sure it fits all the way on the battery post without force. Carefully tighten the clamp bolt using two wrenches to avoid any torque or load on the battery terminal. A good corrosion inhibiter is petroleum jelly (Vaseline), spread a thin coat on the post, clamp and the exposed end of the battery cable. With under hood heat, the Vaseline melts into any cracks and crevices to prevent corrosion from occurring.
