For the last car I sold the buyer was flying in from out of state to purchase it. He paid by certified check from Chase, and Chase has an 800 number that you can call to confirm the check is legit. In the end I didn't bother calling the number because I was comfortable with the buyer (which is I'm sure what all the folks who get ripped off by a scammer say...). I considered setting up a Chase checking account just so he could pay me directly from his account, but decided it was not worth the hassle.
For my replacement car I paid the local seller with a certified check - he just accepted that as good, which surprised me a little, but maybe I seemed trustworthy to him!
I think a lot of it is in knowing the buyer. The buyer worked for GE and had a ge.com email address, which helped build up a level of trust. I also googled him and everything I saw seemed to check out. If somebody writes you a bad check then that is a serious crime that can easily get you jail time - not many regular people are going to risk that.
