My parents moved to a CCRC about 7 years ago (they turned 80 this year) and really like the one they are at. As with anything like that, you want to do your research on the company that runs the CCRC to get a good handle on their mission statement, how well they live up to it, what they offer, prices, and their financial situation as you do not want to move into a place that might have financial issues 5-10 years down the road.
The one my parents moved into is part of a network called ACTS Retirement Communities that has been around for a while so they have a track record.
Some CCRCs have all three phases available at the same location, i.e., independent living, assisted living, and full nursing care. My parents like that option at their CCRC since if one of them ever needed to have full nursing care (they live independently now in a 2-bedroom apartment with a den), it is on the same site and the other would not have to drive or take a bus to a nursing home in another part of town.
All CCRCs have different plans in terms of buy-in cost, monthly fee, how cost of living increases are handled, etc., so you just have to do your homework. But if you find a good one, they can be a good option.
