To me, "older" does not mean "bite the dust". Bite the dust to me means things like when the 12 year old car is in a significant accident, or needs $5000 in repairs in one year perhaps or you want to do road trips and realize getting your saab serviced along the way if something malfunctions could be intolerably difficult. My youngest daughter finishes college this month and drives one of my 2 2002 95s. I explained that if she stays near atlanta, keep driving the saab as I can give her my 95 if hers needs repairs since I also have a standby 2004 Z4. But if she gets a job elsewhere, she should get a new car in order to not worry about car repairs and their inconvenience for a few years. Looks like we'll likely look at Nissans since a Nissan employee on a plane next to her recently gave her some card that entitles her to an employee type discount. My older daughter did likewise a year after college when the 1998 Dodge Stratus became less than dependable and I found a new Mitsubishi Lancer (2010) at the former Saab dealer near us that was offered to me for $12,800 versus the 17,800 sticker. It has been a great car so far and came with a 5yr bumper-bumper warranty with good safety ratings.
