My office was right above the press metal department in the old Willow Run Transmission plant for years. You quickly learned to move in unison with the rhythmic ground shaking of three or four 4,000 ton mechanical presses stamping out torque converter covers - even back in the day when we hand lettered drawings.
Tonawanda hade a unique attitude. I had a job there 10 years or more ago removing and replacing the U-shaped concrete drive located in front of their Administration Bldg. We had two weeks to fully demolish, haul away debris, grade, form, pour, cure, strip, and do lawn restoration for a three lane drive of almost 600 feet total length. Some nimrod had used 3 x 3 inch heavy gage stainless steel mesh to reinforce the old 8 to 10 inch thick concrete roadway twenty years or so previously. The concrete matrix had failed over time but the mesh was still like day one!
We had to beat the living daylights out of the concrete so 100% of the rubble would fall through the 3 x 3 squares. It was the only way to remove the mesh from the rubble and required a lot of time and extra equipment. I commented to my site/Plant contact regarding the surprising existence of the stainless steel mesh (the only time I have ever seen it used) and its surprisingly small opening size.
His response? "I would have told you it was built that way if only you had asked."
I guess I should have asked if Kryptonite was used in any of the construction too. Geesh........
