check lens for fungus growth inside lens (hairy like spider webbing inside lens).
Check for rust if any inside camera body and battery compartment for corrosion as mentioned by Walt.
The Pentax K1000 is almost all metal and should have held up well all through the years if properly cared for and stored. I have a Minolta X700 circa 1980s, with more plastic parts than the Pentax. I had to replaced some of the deteriorate foam seals and all's well.
Both my daughters used it in high school photo work in the 2010s. The camera still works as far as I know after some not so gentle handling by two teenagers 8-).
