That is a lot of added reciprocating mass that has implications for wear, weight and noise and perhaps RPM limits. Would be fantastic if it worked. What I saw of Saab's work was doomed as it was a hinged cylinder block with a rubber waistband.

Some of the issues and benefits can be easily approached with modifies Atkinson's cycle engines. But they do fail to enable turbo engine.

While these technologies are interesting, it is diesel cycle that is king as there are no throttle losses, there is no throttle*. Got 39mpg's on a 900 mile run last week with BMW 3.0 liter diesel, heavy 535dx. With diesel, there is no need to lower compression ratio to make more power, simply add more fuel. As fuel is added during the combustion stoke, there is no sudden combustion or knocking issues.

* because there is no throttle to close, there is no role for a turbo bypass valve. The engine is always on boost. [Variable vane technology improves compressor map/efficiency across wide operating conditions.]
