I think that more gears are helpful for smaller engines, keeping you in or above the power band. My first 3 Saabs ('97 900SE coupe, '02 9-3SE 5-door, '02 9-5 Aero SW) performed just fine with 5-speed manuals. Fuel economy was pretty good considering the age of te platform and my lead-foot tendencies.
I now have a 2012 Mazda5 microvan with a 6-speed manual and an '07 Saab 9-3 2.0T with a 6-speed manual. I don't mind the 6-speeds, in fact it's easier to drive when BOTH cars in the household have the same shift pattern.
FWIW, I grew up on a farm driving tractors, so compared to shifting a low range/high range, non-syncro 4-speed (with a 2 foot long shifter), today's 6-speed transmissions are EASY.
