Interesting discussion to which all have a good point. More gears is definitely for fuel economy. I have an acura with 8 speed duel clutch auto. Shifts very smoothly, and gets amazing gas mileage (35 on highway, sometimes 40 on back roads), but I need to drop 3 gears if I'm looking for any power.
Now with saabs, I was excited about having that new 6th gear on my 08 aero coming from my 01 9-3, but they really missed the mark on that one. They just made the gear ratio's shorter rather than adding a top gear that would cruise at a lower rpm, thus saving gas. 6 was no different than 5th on the older cars, and so like many others, I often skipped a gear when accelerating, as it just wasn't needed.
I will agree that manual shifting through 8 gears would be annoying, but man do I miss shifting.
