rust proofing is fairly common around here, apparently much more than in the USA. There is a ton of salt on our roads right now. Krown and Rust Check are only slightly available in the USA, so your dad may not have known they existed - few non-Canadians here on TSN had heard about them. They are both oil based sprays, are fairly similar, but a bit different, both are sprayed through holes in the doors/chassis etc, and come in several formulations (eg rust check has a thinner creeping spray for inside panels, and a thicker spray for underbody coating). Oil soaked steel does not rust, but it is messy. The creeping stuff actually creeps up surfaces even and it is thin and gets into every seam and never dries... like I said, messy!

I had heard zeibart was more of a waxy product, so would also repel water. That could be incorrect though.

I hear you on the sun damage to interiors also... my 1989 900 had a perfect crack free dash until about 2-3 years ago. It's still good, but it used to live in a cloudier climate in a garage most of the time... we have hot dry summers to go along with the messy winters... kind of both worlds, so the sun exposure it is getting now is having an effect.

It's pretty much impossible to preserve old cars perfectly and still drive them (and not driving cars is also not good for them)... a rolling project car seems to be the most enjoyable way to do this for me anyway.

fwiw, here is a link to a Canadian thread (thanks to Google) where people debate the merits of Krown, Rust Check, and Ziebart (among other things)...
