I set mine out by the curb during the early evening hours on the day before trash pick-up. A number of guys (and sometimes their wives) with pick-up trucks cruise the residential neighborhoods on the evenings before trash day just to collect scrap metal to recycle it.
Some of my neighbors feel their privacy is being invaded that these people grab easy to spot large metal objects from their trash. Personally, I would much rather see such objects go to the smelter than the land-fill. I always place mine separate from the trash bins so they are easier to see.
