OT: Zeus Computer Virus Posted by MI-Roger [Email] (#882) [Profile/Gallery] (more from MI-Roger) on Sat, 15 Apr 2017 05:42:37 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
My wife was using her laptop yesterday to view a video of the local High School Robotics Team's competition posted on Facebook, when her machine locked up with a massive blue screen saying she was infected with the Zeus Virus.
No controls worked. The screen told her to call a 1-866 number to Microsoft Support. Failure to call immediately would result in her Social Security and Credit Card numbers being stolen. Her identify being stolen. All other machines on the same network would become infected. Her friends' machines would become infected via email. Global Warming would be accelerated, World Hunger would increase, and the Yellowstone Caldera would erupt. (OK, so I exaggerated with the last three)
I did a hard shutdown of her machine, then ran both Kapersky and Norton tools to disinfect the machine. Neither found anything. I fired up my work laptop and found D-I-Y instructions to manually remove the virus (linked below). With two browsers loaded I followed the instructions for both Internet Explorer and Google Chrome.
Nothing found in the Apps files of either browser. So either we got lucky and it never fully loaded, or the screen will reappear.
Be aware that another nasty one is out there.
BTW - My wife says she was using Chrome at the time as she was not aware that I had fixed the Internet Explorer on her machine. I screwed-up our wireless router settings months ago, so for a week or so IE would not connect.
Zeus Removal Instructions - (no guarantee of success)
