Yeah, I can see that there is some truth to what he says... Certainly the c900's were not money makers with all those screws and high quality finishes... but they were great cars!
SAAB was unconventional, and did a lot of work under the table... eg the electric car they had developed and also remember their auto show release of the first hybrid convertible? supposedly had a plug in hidden that was not allowed to be shown due to the upcoming Volt or something like that - I think Swade confirmed this also, but it's been a while since I read this. At the time, plug in hybrids were rare. The through the road hybrid concept was a nice simple Swedish-style solution imho... anyway, many of the things that GM absorbed into their product line was the result of under the table work done at SAAB, so GM actually benefited tremendously from SAAB even if they are uninclined to admit it. SAAB was a small piece of GM on the balance sheet, but a significant (and probably undervalued) R+D asset.
I did enjoy that Top Gear send off for SAAB. Entertaining and yet showed more respect/reverence for the brand than was usual for those guys. Too bad the show is kind of kaput now! Always was entertaining...
