For walking, it is probably less critical than running, but really which brand, which shoe in a brand, etc is highly dependent on the person and the specific problem... not just wide or narrow. Eg, if you pronate, you need the high density foam (often grey) in the right locations and a proper amount of rise. Eg I know someone who pronates and basically can only run in Asics with the grey foam (and these are not cheap). New Balance did not work at all - serious chronic injuries, achilles etc. The way she found out (other than trial and error) was to have her gait (and other things) analyzed at a running store. Made all the difference.
So I guess my advice would be if one has problems due to shoes, don't buy online or at a department store, go to a place that is highly knowledgeable and get fitted. Ignore price the first time. Once you know what works, only buy that type, which you could then do online to get a better price. The colours and exterior design changes year to year, but that same basic Asics shoe has been around for at least a decade now... I'm sure New Balance is the same that way... Nike/Adidas seem to change things around more frequently with more of an emphasis on trainers than running shoes... but what works for one person may be a problem for someone else and vice versa...
btw, I am also narrow. I buy narrow with ski boots, soccer cleats etc. Usually lots of options out there that work. Walking is kind of not a big deal for me but sports need a better fit for performance reasons.
