For what it's worth, I've always suspected it was exactly the opposite in terms of gear.
The 9000 Aero is one of very few cars that can go 70+ MPH in second gear. So if you put it in 2nd at about 25 and floor it, by the time you hit 50 the turbo is fully spooled and it's just go, go, go until you hit 70. Getting the fastest 50-70 time in most other cars would require starting in 2nd and shifting to 3rd and the shift takes time.
