I'm all for a laptop version, but laptops cost just as much as smartphones!
The best bet is to do what I did: marry someone who goes through smartphones like most people go through oxygen... then you'll have a neverending supply of them for free. ;^)
Kidding aside, I have a standalone engine-management system in my Audi so I do a lot of logging + analysis + tuning. For logging, the smartphone wins hands-down: it's smaller, the Bluetooth works better, and it automatically uploads logs to the cloud. Plus it's hardware I'd be carrying with me anyway. For log analysis and tuning I prefer the laptop or a desktop PC for the larger screen size.
