I have a 9-3 SportCombi and just have the dog in the back cargo area. Adding a rubber floor mat with some grip to it helps so she won't slip about while cornering/braking. Anchoring the dog in the back just poses an entanglement hazard IMHO as the dog circles to try and get comfortable.
In our Mazda 5, we fold down the 3rd row seat, put down a rubber mat, and use a small cargo-net looped through the 2nd row headrest supports to keep her from moving forward through the cabin.
When I had a 9-5 wagon, it had the pet barrier, which was helpful. It also had a leash which locked into the cargo-track system; we never used that though.
The opening between the cargo area and the rear seats of our 9-3 is small enough to discourage our 55lb standard poodle from trying to get through, so no barrier there.
