Seat Covers and Side Air Bags Posted by MI-Roger [Email] (#882) [Profile/Gallery] (more from MI-Roger) on Sat, 8 Jul 2017 05:15:38 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I need to have some seat upholstery work done on my '08 9-5 Aero and my 2000 Viggen. One of the wear areas on the 9-5 is the seat back side bolster, the Viggen has this same issue as well as the actual side panel of the seat back which covers the air bag.
A local upholstery guy says he cannot perform either repair because the seams adjacent to the damaged areas are designed to split to allow passage of the side air bag during collisions. These seams are 'untouchable'. He has personal experience of someone else doing seat repairs he refused to perform, and the driver subsequently being seriously injured in an accident because the air bag did not release properly.
I half believe him. Both seats have an identifiable air bag chamber surrounded by a separate stitched seam. I can understand that this seam may not be touchable - although as an engineer I would have designed the stitching to secure a specific strip of tear-away membrane with a quantifiable rupture strength rather than rely on manually controlled high speed sewing machines to create specific strength stitches (my father and mother-in-law both worked in automotive seat fabrication factories so I am familiar with the machines and techniques used to construct sewn OEM seats).
Did SAAB ever issue a TSB or equivalent discussing what can and cannot be repaired on their seats during re-upholstery?
Thanks
