First of all, the depreciation on any high-end car is steep. Those that can afford them new usually buy new, leaving a gap in the market. A 2013 BMW 750i with CPO is listed by KBB at $30K - 35K; this is less than what the 2013 Tesla in the story was selling for, despite a higher initial cost.
Second, operating costs: we had an Audi A6 Avant that was using $200 - 250 of gasoline per month. The Chevy Volt that replaced it uses approximately $20 - 25 worth of electricity for the same commuting duty. The $180 - $225 savings per month goes a long way towards a monthly car payment. Thanks to everyone for subsidizing the roads, but we still have to pay full annual registration with both the state and the city we live in.
