Admittedly, the Audi A6 is a somewhat invalid comparison as it's a fairly "thirsty" car, but that is what I had and the data that I have for comparison. The A6 was a bit too large for us; I picked it up used from a friend of a friend who knew that I liked Audis (I've had five of them, but never again after that one!) with 50,000 miles for $5000. After driving it for a few years, and fixing too many problems, I sold it in worse physical condition (urban wear & tear) but better running condition for $6500.
Even if I assumed something more fuel efficient than the Audi, say 30% better (what my neighbor's Subaru gets), it still presents a substantial savings on gasoline per month. My wife and I both enjoy driving nice, responsive cars, so a true econobox would not have been under consideration. And yes, I also appreciate the value of used cars: the two Volts are the first brand-new cars that I have bought in decades. My next-newest car is my 1994 9000 Aero!
