To me, the big downside of time to recharge is a factor only on long cross-country trips and/or if you are driving hundreds of miles per day - we charge our car overnight almost every night (forgetting to do so occurs less and less as the habit of plugging in takes over). A Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) such as the Chevy Volt addresses this issue, but at the cost of complexity. Fiat-Chrysler had a different approach and was offering a free week per year Enterprise car rental of a more suitable vehicle for long trips.
