Isn't the F-series the best selling vehicle in North America? I think Camry now owns best selling car, but IIRC the F-series is the best selling vehicle.
I will say the first and only pickup I've ever owned was a 1995 F-150. It was a 2WD with straight six and a 5-speed, long bed and extended cab. *Dead* simple, not much to break. It was not fast, but I didn't buy it to be fast. ;) I bought it with the express purpose of it being cheap and durable, and that's what it was. For something I had to daily drive, I'd still go Chevy, but as a weekend workhorse there is something to be said for an engine that endured 40 years of production. :) Drove that beast 500 miles to SoCal with a refrigerator in back and it was great.
The Tacoma is a great compact (though not so compact anymore) truck and if that's what you need that's probably the one to get, but if you don't have space considerations you can buy a full size Ford or Chevy for less than Tacoma dollars - I don't see the point in going for the smaller, less capable truck. I actually went shopping for a compact (Ranger, Tacoma) and couldn't justify the insane dollars, which is how I ended up with that F-150. I doubt much has changed.
On the general subject of pickups, I'd advise against any regular cab. Go for the extended, quad, crew, whatever. Front seats that don't recline because they're backed up against the cab *suck*.
