There's a new/old scam in town to watch out for... Inspector Scam Posted by Scott Paterson [Email] (#13) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Scott Paterson) on Thu, 3 Aug 2017 11:28:10 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I keep an updated thread on scammers who try and fail to get people here to fall for their crap, but I encountered a new version on an old scam today so I thought I would post about it.
I'll also be giving a talk about this and other scams at the 2017 Saab Owners Convention in Pomona CA later this month.
First off, I keep an updated scammer post thread on the site that is well-indexed by Google (linked here and at the very bottom of this post): http://www.saabnet.com/tsn/bb/general/index.html?bID=283904?scams
This current scam is based on the over-pay scam I had a lot of fun exploiting over a decade ago (maybe two). It's based on the over-pay scam. I detail this in a lot of fun here (it's a fun read): http://www.saabnet.com/tsn/class/scam/
Basically, this time, the scammer is using text to avoid email detection software... He/She cannot come see the car but will send someone to come professionally inspect. They will send you a check for $1,000 to pay the inspector to check out the car. In the end, the inspector won't come because they are not actually interested in your car, just your money. So, the check you cashed has cleared, but if you read my links, you'll find that it can take up to ten full days for a check to come back as counterfeit - here in California, they have to make the funds from checks we deposit available to us within 48 hours - it's a consumer protection thing so that banks can't hold up funds that are really ours and cause us problems paying bills etc, but in this case, it backfires because when that check comes back as counterfeit, those funds will be promptly deducted from your account along with a $25 fee (or whatever it is now) for depositing a fake check, even though it's not your fault (banks like to charge fees on everything they can). Plus, I tried it to see just how it works and you can read about it at the link I gave above about the over-pay (did I say it was a fun read?) scam.
