Interesting... I find the opposite, that the directionals are very good in snow slush and rain. I don't terribly worry about noise though (especially on the winters) but I have not noticed anything too loud. I run General GMAX as-03 summer tires on my 9-5 (225-45R17) and on my c900 (195/60R16 iirc) I'm very happy with them. I had Bridgestone re970's previously on the 9-5 and also liked those (but got a great deal on the generals)... I ran Nokian nrh2 (directional) many years ago on c900's and it's amazing and never loud in my experience.

I generally find these types of patterns work very well on saabs, whereas I have generally not liked the non-directional symmetric tires that have come on wheels I got from other people. That may have as much to do with that I buy higher performance, more costly tires... but many nondirectional symmetric tires are geared to the more general user (seeking high mileage tires etc). I also feel the assymetrics are not a great buy as they can not be rotated on the rim and in the case o the 9-5, inside edges o the tires can be eaten quicker than the outside especially on the rears.

It is possible to flip a symmetric over the rim, but you need to do it soon enough. It sounds like that was the problem in this case.
