Re: NZ car rental tips? - Saabnet.com Bulletin Board
I've rented cars in New Zealand twice. It's a pleasant place to drive, not much traffic and great roads. The only challenge is of course driving on the left. Auckland is a big city and that can be an intimidating place to start, but otherwise you should be fine. Cars do tend to be smaller there, but the speeds are lower too without major highways in most of the country.
There aren't a lot of countries where I would recommend this, but I agree with Simon on checking with local agencies in NZ. I've rented from Juicy (don't laugh!) and another company I don't remember and prices were much lower than the international agencies and the service was great. Drive holidays for international tourists are VERY popular there and a very competitive market so the local agencies compete heavily in this space.
Note that for some reason some credit cards exclude NZ from their rental car insurance coverage, so make sure you use one that doesn't if that's your plan for coverage.
Feel free to ask any other NZ related questions too!
