University students in many cases don't really need cars, and in fact it can be a major hindrance as they are costly things to own. I rode a bike all the time when I was in university and never owned a car... I guess I was a couple decades ahead of the hipsters! But it wasn't a single speed let alone fixie... and I didn't do the beard and piercings either... I still try to ride my bike when I can, even in winter, but family needs unfortunately have reduced the amount of bike commuting I do.
Cities up here are generally safer than in the USA though, so walking the streets late at night is generally not a problem and there is often tons of student housing options within walking distance of most universities here. That may be different in parts of the US, creating greater necessity for cars.
Sad to see those cars rot away. He should at least be sending them to a proper pick and pull that will enable parts to be reused. In general, when looking at end of useful life options, finding a good pick-n-pull to send cars to is good for everyone. Sounds like this guy is a little bit crazy though, maybe wanting a certain amount of $$$ for each car which may be completely unrealistic especially given that they sat... and then basically thumbing his nose - "if you won't pay my unrealistic asking price, I'll just trash it"... which of course completely ignores how markets work, but some people are like that unfortunately... I can see not wanting to sell them to someone who will flip them as is, but when you gotta move 20 cars per month, ya gotta deal a bit, right? There are ways to find the right buyer at low price...
On a related note: Does this guy not need a dealer's license to clean up his property?
