I think it really depends on the car, but I agree. Many new cars are horrible to see out the back, or to check blind spots. Subaru Forester is awful in that regard in my experience (at least for its size), though there are probably worse. The older Foresters have better rearward visibility imho. Part of it is the high belt lines, part is the giant headrests in newer cars. I actually think that in an effort to improve active safety, cars have become worse in terms of passive safety. What happens when one of these active systems fails and people are relying on it? The obvious conclusion is to buy a new car every 3-4 years so that the likelihood of age related failure is low. Or at least the car manufacturers would like that!
