2000 grit is very fine. With water, you are essentially polishing. Actually, you could finish off by doing a complete buff job to clean up little scratches in the clear. All this does is polish out a thin amount of clear coat. TBH, the only thing you can do to make stone chips worse is to leave them and let them rust. A blob of paint can easily be removed and made perfect, but it does protect the metal underneath even if it looks imperfect in the short term...
