Clarification: Redundancy Posted by DnstrDan [Email] (#1361) [Profile/Gallery] (more from DnstrDan) on Wed, 1 Aug 2018 10:52:29 In Reply to: Re: Safety Backup(s) When Using Auto Ramps, Tom G [Profile/Gallery] , Tue, 31 Jul 2018 14:37:04 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
My position is that all methods of car support, when working underneath one at home and alone, should have a load-bearing backup. Meaning, I do not trust working under car ramps without a failsafe structural back-up in case they fail. Acceptable backups to car ramps, for me, are jackstands or wooden blocks placed underneath the car, even if they impede usable workspace.
When using jackstands instead of ramps for primary support, an acceptable redundant backup could be either blocks or a raised floor jack (touching but not actively load bearing) or even dismounted wheels. When my dad worked on his tractors, he used an overhead chain hoist backed up by blocks; the idea being that a contingency will be engaged if the primary should fail.
The real point of this post is to solicit from other Saabers their own level of acceptable risk, and how they deal with it, when working underneath cars in general, and when using ramps in particular.
